Services for Businesses, Charities and Organisations

Copyediting

Copyediting is the editing process which prepares a text for publication. This means ensuring that a text is clear, consistent, readable and accurate, and that it is written in a style that will be appropriate for the target audience. Typically, copyediting involves:

  • correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation

  • improving the sense and flow of the writing, and removing awkward phrasing

  • improving clarity

  • correcting inconsistencies

  • developing the structure of your work

The level of intervention involved in a copyedit will depend on your requirements.

Copywriting

Copywriting is the production of written content – known as ‘copy’ – for a particular purpose. This could include text for advertisements, brochures, websites, social media posts, reports and press releases. Copywriting involves creating copy which informs and persuades, whilst also conveying trust, credibility and professionalism.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final quality check before a text is published. This typically involves checking grammar, spelling, punctuation and consistency, as well as finding any last-minute errors. Proofreading sometimes takes place after formatting has been applied to the text, and is usually the last stage in the editorial process.

Developmental Editing

Sometimes a text may need more work than a simple copyedit. Developmental editing (sometimes called structural editing or substantive editing) is an editing process which focuses on the big picture, considering the organisation of ideas, the narrative structure and the coherence of arguments within a work. Developmental editing typically takes place early in the editorial process, before any sentence-level intervention (e.g. copyediting or proofreading) has taken place.
